Colours of Humanity Arts Exhibition
Open Call 2025


The European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, the Goethe-Institut and the Eaton Hong Kong invite artists to submit works for consideration in the annual Colours of Humanity Arts Exhibition. Selected artworks will be showcased in a group exhibition at Goethe Gallery Hong Kong alongside public programmes at EATON, with one outstanding artwork receiving the grand prize: an exclusive opportunity to exhibit at Tomorrow Maybe, EATON HK, in 2026.

Deadline: 15 September 2025 (HKT 23:59)

Theme: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion – We seek bold, innovative interpretations across all media (painting, sculpture, installation, digital, mixed media, etc.).

Opportunities & Prizes 

  • Exhibition: Finalists will be exhibited at the Goethe Gallery Hong Kong (21 November – 21 December 2025)
  • Community Programs: Up to 3 programmes will be realised at EATON with $8000 honorarium each.
  • Grand Prize: The jury’s top selection will earn a dedicated solo exhibition at EATON Hong Kong in 2026, offering a unique platform for artistic exposure.

NEW CATEGORY: Community Action Pitch
Following the success of our 2024 public programs – including Grassroots Future's recipe book launch and food sharing event, and Nicole M. Nepomuceno's collective zine-making workshop – we're excited to grow this initiative in 2025 to expand Colours of Humanity as a platform for participatory and community-driven programming.

This is a new open call category for 2025 - we invite proposals for 1-day community-driven programs that bring our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion themes to life through participatory experiences. Up to 3 selected ideas will receive funding, venue support, and promotion during our exhibition.

What we’re looking for:

✓ Interactive formats: Workshops, screenings, performances, discussions
✓ Community focus: Programs serving underrepresented groups
✓ Theme connection: Clear ties to our values of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
✓ Feasibility: Realistic budget and timeline (1-day event at EATON)

Selected proposals will receive:

  • Funding support ($8000 all inclusive)
  • Venue access at one of the following locations: Goethe Gallery, Black Box Studio, or EATON Hong Kong (venue to be selected by the applicant in their proposal).
  • Promotional platform alongside our exhibition


Example Pitches:
• Film screening by migrant workers + post-show dialogue
• Refugee-led cooking classes
• Sensory workshops for visually impaired audiences




Eligibility

  • Open to all Hong Kong-based artists. Artists of diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to submit their work.
  • The Open Call does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race or ethnicity, color, immigration status, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, artistic training or background.
  • No entry fee. Maximum of 3 submissions per artist; only 1 may be exhibited.Community Action Pitch proposals are not counted toward this artwork submission limit.
  • Artworks must be original and not previously exhibited at Goethe Gallery.



Selection Process & Criteria

Judging Methodology:
All entries will be evaluated by an independent judging panel based on the below criteria:

  1. Artistic Excellence 
    • Demonstrated creativity and originality
    • Technical execution and aesthetic quality
    • Conceptual depth and innovation
  2. Theme Interpretation
    • Clear engagement with diversity, equity and inclusion principles
    • Representation of underrepresented voices or experiences
    • Potential inspire social awareness and foster dialogue
    • Sensitivity in handling complex social issues
  3. Message and Narrative
    • Addresses urgent social, cultural, or political conversations
    • Ability to evoke empathy, reflection, or visceral response
    • Balances complexity with approachability for diverse audiences

Notification:

  • Shortlisted artists will receive email notification by October 1st.
  • Selected artists must confirm participation within 7 days of notification.

Important Notes:

  • Judges' decisions are final and not subject to appeal
  • The organizer reserves the right to:
    • Disqualify entries that violate competition rules
    • Withdraw the prize if winner cannot be contacted
    • Modify the selection timeline if necessary
  • No correspondence will be entered into regarding judging decisions

Disqualification Grounds:
Entries may be disqualified if:

  • The artwork doesn't meet stated requirements
  • The artist cannot be reached at provided contact details
  • Required verification isn't provided within stipulated timelines
  • The work is found to violate competition ethics or local laws



Exhibition Requirements for Shortlisted Artists

Notification & Participation

  • Shortlisted artists will be notified via email by the October 1st.
  • Selected works must remain on display for the entire exhibition period. No substitutions allowed.

Artwork Preparation & Delivery

  1. Labeling Requirements:
    • Clearly mark on the back of each work:
      • Artist's full name
      • Artwork title
      • Contact address and phone number
  2. Delivery Responsibilities:
    • Artists bear all costs and risks of transporting works to:

    • Delivery date: Scheduled time slot at least one week before opening
    • Works must arrive ready to exhibit:
      • Framed pieces must be delivered framed (artist covers costs)
      • Video artists must provide necessary playback equipment unless discussed with the curator
  3. Installation:
    • The organizer provides basic hanging/display assistance
    • Special installations should be set up by the artist in tandem with the curator and installers

Post-Exhibition Collection

  • Artists must collect works within the notified timeframe after closing
  • All collection costs and risks are the artist's responsibility

Liability & Insurance

  • While we exercise reasonable care, the organizer and venue:
    • Are not liable for loss/damage during transport, exhibition, or storage
    • Recommend artists obtain insurance coverage

Image Rights

  • The organizer may photograph and reproduce exhibited works for:
    • Documentation
    • Promotional materials (print/digital)
    • Educational purposes
  • Artists will always be credited
  • Copyright remains with the artist

Privacy Policy

Personal data will only be used for:

  • Application processing
  • Exhibition administration
  • Judging purposes
